Postdoc in Biogeochemical Modeling - Columbia University/Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory
Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University is seeking a postdoctoral research scientist to perform research in the general area of ocean biogeochemical modeling. The appointment will initially be for one year, with future reappointment contingent on performance and funding. The specific research topic will depend in part on the interests of the successful applicant. Areas of interest include: development of improved parameterizations of key biogeochemical processes such as export and remineralization of particulate organic matter; modeling of the marine nitrogen cycle; investigating the role of iron in controlling atmospheric CO2 concentrations, particularly in the context of various ocean iron fertilization scenarios; optimization of biogeochemical models using data assimilation/adjoint techniques; and process modeling of paleoceanographic proxies such as Pa/Th and neodymium isotopes. The modeling will be in the context of recently developed, state-of-the-art computational methods and tools for simulation of biogeochemical tracers. Applicants must have a PhD in oceanography, biogeosciences, applied and computational mathematics, or a related field. Applicants with a background in studying biogeochemical processes, either through observations or models are especially encouraged to apply. Prior experience with biogeochemical models, while useful, is not necessary. But a strong interest in mathematical and numerical modeling and a willingness to pick up the requisite skills is essential. Search will remain open for 30 days after the ad appears. Applicants should submit a personal statement describing research experience and interests, a curriculum vitae, and the names and addresses of three references, to:
