Important Ocean Acidification legislation
Attention OCB -
The Federal Ocean Acidification Research and Monitoring Act (FOARAM),
introduced in 2007, is a bill under consideration in both the House
(Bill 4174) and the Senate (Bill 1581) to establish an Interagency
Committee on Ocean Acidification. This interagency committee would be
charged with 1) Developing a strategic research and implementation plan
for coordinated federal activities to improve the understanding of the
role of increased ocean acidification on marine ecosystems; and 2)
Establishing an ocean acidification program within the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration. Appropriations for this bill ramp up
from $6M in FY09 to $30M in FY13.
