Invitation to GEOTRACES Launch Event at Ocean Sciences
GEOTRACES is pleased to announce the launch of its series of global ocean sections with the completion, on January 9th 2010, of the first dedicated GEOTRACES section. The cruise included three legs in the Indian Ocean and ended in Cape Town, South Africa (Research Vessel Hakuho Maru cruise KH-09-5 leg-1, 2, and 3). In conjunction with the launch, GEOTRACES will host a lunchtime event at the Ocean Sciences meeting in Portland to introduce GEOTRACES objectives and anticipated products to the wider oceanographic community.
GEOTRACES is a global study of the marine biogeochemical cycles of trace elements and their isotopes. Trace element and isotope distributions will be determined to characterize their supply, removal and internal cycling within the ocean. These results are expected to benefit many investigators whose interests lie outside the immediate field of trace-element biogeochemistry. GEOTRACES products will also be of benefit to international programs; for example:
SOLAS: Global information about aerosol abundance, and a wide suite of upper-ocean trace-metal concentrations
IMBER: Distribution and chemical cycling of micronutrients that influence marine ecosystems
PAGES and IMAGES: Calibration of geochemical proxies used to reconstruct past ocean conditions
CLIVAR: Carbon isotopes and tracers of ocean circulation.
At the Portland launch event, organizers of GEOTRACES will present a brief description of the scope of the field program as well as the anticipated products and the data system designed to make the results available. Anyone interested in participating in or using data from GEOTRACES is encouraged to attend. The event is scheduled for Room E-143 in the Oregon Convention Center from 11:45-12:45 on Wednesday, 24 February 2010. Boxed lunches will be provided.
