Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Earth System Evolution

School of Earth and Ocean Sciences
Faculty of Science
University of Victoria

The School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position in Earth System Evolution to begin in July 2011. Applicants with interdisciplinary research interests that bridge solid earth–hydrosphere–atmosphere–biosphere–cryosphere boundaries will be considered. These could include sedimentary geochemistry or geology, paleoclimate, biogeochemistry, or surface/lithosphere geodynamics. We seek to complement our existing strengths by recruiting an individual who employs integrative approaches that combine fieldwork, laboratory analyses and experiments, and/or numerical modeling.

The successful candidate will develop a vigorous independent externally funded research program that complements and advances SEOS’ strengths in earth system science, mentor graduate students, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses. A Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment and post-doctoral experience is desirable.

Applicants should submit a letter of application, CV, and two page statements of current and future research, and teaching experience and philosophy, as well as contact information (names, addresses, fax, email) for four references. Applications should be sent to Dr. Kathryn Gillis, Director, School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, University of Victoria, P.O. Box 3020, STN CSC, Victoria, B.C. V8W 3N5, Canada: fax: 250-721-6120; e-mail: seos@uvic.ca. Review of applications will begin on August 6th, 2010, and continue until a suitable candidate is identified. Information about the department can be found at http://www.seos.uvic.ca/.

The University of Victoria is an equity employer and encourages applications from women, persons with disabilities, visible minorities, Aboriginal Peoples, people of all sexual orientations and genders, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of the University. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, in accordance with Canadian Immigration requirements, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
